In this lesson we will show you how to register and administer a domain name with Godaddy.com.
The concepts explored here are applicable to any registrar you decide to use.
First, we need to check if your desired domain name is available. To do so, type the domain name into the search bar.
If your domain name is available, you will see this message displayed on the screen.
If it is not available, you will need to search for another domain.
Certain domain names might be available, but at a premium price, because of their popularity.
For example: webdevelopmentcourse.com is available, but the price is much more expensive ($1600.00) because it is a premium domain.
Make sure the domain you have found is available at the standard rate of $9.99 US per year.
You have the option of also registering the same domain name with different extensions, if you need to, down below.
For now we will register just the single domain.
Click the Select button to add the domain name product to your shopping cart.
Now click the "Continue to Cart" button to proceed to check out.
Before you confirm your order, GoDaddy will offer you additional products.
The first is Domain Privacy. This is an important feature if you would like your domain ownership records to remain private.
Remember that by default all Top Level domain registration details are made available to the public, through ICANN.
We can confirm this by visiting: whois.icann.org.
Here we can search a domain to find information about the registered owner.
Let's search: Google.com.
This page contains the WHOIS information for google.com.
We can see there is quite a bit of information listed here.
The first thing we see is the Registration, Admin and Technical contacts for the Google.com domain.
This includes: Name, Address and Contact Info.
We can also see who registered the domain on behalf of Google. MarkMonitor Inc. is the listed registrar.
Next is the Raw WHOIS Record, which provides even more detailed information about the domain.
If you register a domain under your own name and address, the information would be made available just like this, without using Domain Privacy.
It is generally a good idea to use Domain Privacy, so your personal or business information is not entered into spam lists.
To see what your domain information will look like, with the domain privacy option - run a WHOIS search on the domain mywebdevcourse.com. This is a sample domain we registered for the purpose of this tutorial.
You can see that all the information is private.
Next you can specify if you want to add a GoDaddy shared-hosting package for your website. Since the focal point of this course will be on cloud hosting, do not check off any of these boxes.
We will be using a popular cloud hosting provider to host our web sites.
Next, we can add a professional email to our domain name. This means we can get an email such as firstname.lastname@example.org.
The email service offered from GoDaddy is fairly expensive for what you get. Their webmail application is also quite slow and non-user friendly.
We will be using a service called "Google Apps for Work" to create a personalized email address for our domain, later in this course. The Google product is much better and offers many more features.
Once you have completed this page, click the "Continue to Cart" button.
On this page, select the term you would like to register the domain name for.
Now click Proceed to Checkout.
If you are a new customer, click the continue button in the "New Customers Panel".
Now enter your Billing Information. Also enter your email address and the username and password you would like to use to login the system.
The PIN number is used when you call technical support.
Next, select your Payment Method and click Continue.
Once your payment is confirmed, you will receive an email confirmation. The domain name is normally ready within a few minutes.
You will also receive an email that requires you to activate your account by clicking a link.
