To install MAMP server visit: www.mamp.info
We have the option of downloading MAMP or MAMP Pro. MAMP Pro has some additional features that are not included with the free version.
We will be working with the standard MAMP package, so click the first download link.
Make sure MAC OS X is selected and click "download".
The file is fairly large (255mb), so it may take a few minutes.
Once installed, double-click the MAMP package.
Click "Continue" when prompted.
Accept the License Agreement.
Click the Customize button at the bottom and uncheck "Mamp Pro".
Type in your system password if needed, in order to install the package.
Once the installation has completed, click Launchpad and open MAMP.
Leave the check box selected and click the "Launch Mamp" button.
When the MAMP dialogue box appears, click the "Preferences" button.
We will configure some basic settings before launching the server.
Now click "Ok" and click the "Start Servers" button.
This will launch both the MySQL and APACHE services.
Once the server has booted, click the "Open WebStart page" button.
Your web browser will load with the default MAMP server page.
This indicates that your server is configured properly and working.
The page also gives some important information about your MAMP server settings.
One of the most important things to keep in mind is the MySQL Password, which is set to "root" by default. You will use this password to establish database connections as we progress through the lessons. Since windows users do not require a MySQL password by default, most of the lessons in the PHP and MySQL section of this course will have a blank password. You will need to replace the blank password with "root". You will have a better understanding of this later in the course.
The Host URL is Localhost.
This URL will be used very often as we progress through the lessons. If you click on the localhost link in your browser, you can see the address of this particular file on your computer.
It is located in the MAMP folder inside the Web Root directory.
The 8888 is the default port number assigned to APACHE HTTP web server.
You will need to make sure you include the port number in your url to access your web files.
To access your web root directory, click on "Finder".
Then select "Applications".
Click on the MAMP folder.
Open the htdocs directory.
This is where all the website projects will be stored. The directory is currently empty, we will be adding folders later on.
Say for example we wanted to develop a website called "mywebsite".
We would create a folder called mywebsite and store our html files in this folder.
Then to view the site we would type in:
Where index.html would be replaced with the name of the web file.
We will be exploring this in more detail later in this section, so don't worry about it for now.
Now back in the main MAMP folder, there are a few important configuration files that will be used later in this course:
Once you have completed these steps you can close your web browser, and the folders we opened. You can leave the server running, since we will be using it in the next lesson.
